Delphi, home to the temple of Apollo, which is just below the theatre. There is another temple to Athena, which you can see at the top of the picture, lower down the mountain. This theatre was not as accoustically marvelous as the one in Epidauros.

The treasury at the temple to Apollo in Delphi. I was personally most entranced by Delphi thinking that I was at the place where people came to get answers from the oracle of Apollo. With the help of hallucinogenic plants, she offered them wisdom and information.

Finally, our tour guide Calina, full of information and always ready to answer our questions. Here she is talking to us about this charioteer at the museum in Delphi.

Our final stop on the road trip was Kalambaka, a town nestled up against the sheer cliffs of Meteora, home to the last six Monasteries in the area. Here is a view from the bottom of one of the monasteries. Notice the supply basket which could be lowered. Very sensible, since climbing all of those stairs with the daily bread would be a grueling task.

One of the most interesting rooms of one of the monasteries was the Charnel House, a holding place for the skulls and bones of saints. We were told that many of them died as martyrs of the faith.

Almaty International School Excursion to Greece

Seven students, two parents and one teacher took a week away from school in Kazakhstan to visit classical Greece. We spent three nights in Athens and three nights on the road, traveling to historic sites, both from antiquity and from the Byzantine era. Although we were often on a tour bus, traveling from place to place, it was worth it to be taken back into time at every stop to see and experience the wonders of ancient Greece.
